Cocos Island is in Costa Rica, which is in Central America. The island is located 300 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. It took us 1 1/2 days to get there by boat (MV Argo) and then we had 7 days of diving. Cocos Island is a World Heritage Site. It has many tales of pirates and buried treasure on the island but the most spectacular treasure is what lies underneath the water. SHARKS!!! Hammerheads, White Tips, Black Tips and Galapagos were all seen. There are also Whale, Silky and Silver Tips but we did not see these. Mother Nature has a way of always changing what you see. I guess it is her way of saying you need to come back. Even though we did not see the Whale Shark we did encounter 3 bottle nose dolphins on a safety stop, which was the highlight of my trip.
This was our third trip to Cocos but my first with a video camera. It is tough diving in and of itself and with a camera it is more difficult. The currents and surge at Cocos are extreme at times.
I recommend Cocos to any serious diver. It is a trip that will remain with you forever. It gets into your blood and you’ll want to keep going back.
